The church, which is visible from far, and the world-famous helical tunnels of the Gotthard railway line are the attractions of Wassen, the village at the foot of the Susten pass.
There is scarcely anybody who does not know Wassen's famous church. After the opening of the railway line over the Gotthard, this church, that is located on a little hill, has become a famous landmark for everybody travelling southwards, and a point of focus in the confusing flow of the railway lines through the tunnels. Out of the train window, you can see the church, which ranks among Switzerland's most known builduings in baroque style, from three different angles. The pretty village, with its eye-catching fountain as well as the wooden and stone houses which are always brightly decorated with flowers, is certainly worth a visit. Wassen is an excellent point of departure for numerous alpine passes, as it is located at the intersection of these roads. In less than an hour you will arrive in the canton of Ticino (via the Gotthard pass), in the canton of Graubünden (via the Oberalp pass) or at the Rhone glacier in the canton of Valais (via the Furka pass).
