Unterschächen

This village is located on the road to the Klausenpass at the entrance to the Brunnital and is shielded by striking mountain tops on the southern side.
Summer
Unterschächen, the village at the tail end of the Schächen valley, lies on the road to the Klausen pass, between two streams (Aeschschächen and Brunnischächen), on about 1,000 m above sea level. Surrounded by impressive mountains (some of them are as high as 3,000 m) such as the "grosser Ruchen", the "Schärhorn" or the "Clariden", Unterschächen offers the guest a huge number of mountain hikes. Unterschächen ranks among Switzerland's top destionations for mountaineers and climbers, since amateurs as well as professionals will find here challenging trails and climbing walls with steep, partially vertical rock faces.

Winter
Whether during ski-hikes, on the cross-country circuit, during snowshoe hikes in the Brunnital or with little skiiers: Unterschächen meets the expectations of many winter sportsmen.

Local Information Unterschächen

The alpine pasture Aesch with its romantic, approximately 100 metres high Stäuben waterfall belongs to the major attractions in Uri. Until 1900, when the road over the Klausen pass to the canton of Glarus was opened, Aesch was an important place for a rest along the old trail. Following a picturesque hiking trail, it is a one-hour walk from Unterschächen to Aesch. Look out for the so-called "Nytler", former cooling cellars for milk, as you are on your way. A steep footpath leads from Aesch up to the Klausen pass.
