Erstfeld

The area around Erstfeld delights friends of unspoilt countryside with its numerous hiking trails. Three cable railways make it accessible to reach the moutain farms on 1,000 m above sea level all year round. They take you up to wonderful sunny alpine pastures high above the Reusstal with ease.
Erstfeld is located in the lower part of the Urner Reusstal on 472 m above sea level, only a few kilometres south of the Lake of Uri. The village's surroundings captivate the visitor with an impressive mountainuous backdrop. Ersfeld's history and image are marked by the railway, since it has been playing an important role during the construction time of the Gotthard railway line. These old days of railway pioneering work have left their mark so that, since 1908, Erstfeld has its own casino. Its position on the internationally important road over the Gotthard pass allows the village to be reached rapidly from every direction. To the west of Erstfeld spreads a wildly romantic valley, the Erstfeldertal, which ends in the Schlossberg glacier and offers a wide range of hiking trails. Erstfeld is the official location for the "Foundation of the Historic Heritage of the Swiss National Railway" and the village's special proud are the two labels "Energiestadt" and "star naturemade". Erstfeld has been awarded with the cantonal prize for environmental care, because of its exemplary achievements in the matter of protection and preservation of natural beauty in Uri.
