To the image of Amsteg belongs the medieval castle of Zwing Uri, situated on the Flüeli hill. In Amsteg itself, striking guesthouses, where even Goethe once stayed overnight, dominate the village.
The castle ruins of Zwing Uri date back to the Middle Ages. The massive tower base is the only remaining part of this former fortification. According to old writings, the castle has been destroyed during the revolts from the people of central Switzerland. In 1978, extensive digging and restauration works have been carried out. Archeological researches proved that the Flüeli was already populated around 1150. About 1200, the rural fortification has been completed with a tremendous tower. The tower has been inhabited until the early 14th century. A family of local nobility is thought to having been the owners of the castle. The castle's name of Zwing Uri appears for the first time in the chronicle of the "Weisse Buch". It refers to a claim to power.
