Altdorf

Altdorf, the capital of Uri, is situated in the lower Reusstal, south of Lake Lucerne. This little town has to offer a rich history as well as an interesting present time: Its manifold culture from traditional heritage like the legend of Switzerland's national hero to the modern music festival "Alpentöne" has its impact far beyond the canton's boarder.
In its role as capital, Altdorf is the economic, political, cultural and social centre of Uri. The architecture in Italian style, the squares and narrow streets make the visitors remember the neighbourhood to the South. The centre of the village with the Tell memorial is of important national significance. In Summer, the region around Altdorf offers almost unlimited opportunities to spend one's leisure time. The Lake makes the visitors feel tempted with excursions to the historical sites of Switzerland. Steamships still today ensure Uri with a taste of the good old days and its magical atmosphere. Water sports such as swimming, surfing, sailing, rowing and fishing can be done here. Post buses or cable railways bring you to the near alpine world. There are guides to be hired for special tours like mineral hikes, mountain hikes or climbing tours.
