Susten pass connects the Aare valley with the Reuss valley, the villages Innertkirchen with Wassen, Canton Bern with Canton Uri. The 46 km long pass reaches the height of 2,259m above sea level.
In the younger years a reporter accounted the numerous hikes he did on the old Susten trail from Wassen through Meiental, usually in connection to moumtain climbing in high mountain ranges in Wasserhorn, Fünffingerstöcken or in Sustenhorn area. The rough trail lead upwards on a shadowy slope, passing a military bulwark in Meien. This bulwark was built by the inhabitants of Canton Uri during the 2nd Villmeger War (1712), because they were afraid of the invasion of Bern's armed forces.
Just before the Husen hamlet, the trail leapt over to the sunny slope and from here on would continue to hold out until Hinterfeldalp. These days, whoever with a motorized vehicle turns off the heavy traffic of the Gotthard route strikes a fully different direction: through a tunnel one goes on to the gorge bridge and immediately into the next tunnel, and after a sharp curve you are already high above the Meienreuss.
