A journey to the Klausen pass is already a special experience because of the extravagant lay-out of the road, regardless whether you arrive from the side of the canton Uri or Glarus, and independent of the vehicle you undertake the trip with.
The road leads from Flüelen on the shores of the Lake Lucerne towards the East, crosses Altdorf, Bürglen, Spiringen, Unterschächen, winds its way along some narrow bends and finally attains to the top of the Klausen pass. The post buses drive over the pass from the end of June to the end of September. The road was built in 1948. The highest point lies on 1,948 m above sea level, from where one has a wonderful view of the canton of Uri.
A funny fact is the following: Some cantons have a neat closed shape, others stretch their corners far into neighbourly terrain. Uri belongs to the last mentioned: Urnerboden, dessen Wasser doch der Glarner Linth zuströmt, gehört bis zum Scheidbächli hinab den Urnern. This area is an almost 8 km long meadow, the most spacious alp of our country. Nearly one thousand heads of cattle find here plenty of grass.
