Canton Uri has many cliffs thanks to its great mix of valleys and mountains. While some cliffs are brittle and others are too remote to be interesting for technical climbing, many are extraordinarily beautiful. These places enjoy a good reputation among rock climbers.
It is best to compare Urnerland to a treasure island with so many small and hidden climbing jewels. The rock climbing region begins from the northern area of the Voralpen and goes to the source of the Reuss, on towards the always higher regions of the alpine ridges. On this route the Reuss valley branches out into many side valleys. The north deals with the easily accessible limestone of the Voralpen. Finally, the majestic high Alps with its crystalline underground like gneiss or granite towers up towards the south. Through its powerful geological structures and the division of three different rock types, several climbing worlds are created and are waiting to be discovered.
